Have you ever had a craving for something good to eat or drink? I wonder what your most common craving is..... Pizza? Chocolate? Something that only your grandma bakes? A cold drink on a hot day - or a cup of hot chocolate on a dreary one? Maybe like the pup above - it's really good ice cream!
Cravings can be pretty strong - and they can be quite controlling - they are hard to get past sometimes. Sometimes what we crave is spurred on by a commercial - or a memory - or... We need to pay attention to what pulls us in. Sometimes the thing that sparks a craving spurs on to something good - and sometimes - it is for something that is not good for us.
In Matthew Chapter 5 verse 6 Jesus says " Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness - for they will be filled." If we crave righteousness, our craving will be satisfied.
What's that about? We usually hunger after food and drink - just how does righteousness slide in here - I've never seen that on a menu. And while we're asking questions - what is righteousness anyways?
Good Question!
There are a few angles you could take as you try to understand what righteousness is but they all come down to this -I think. Righteousness means God's ways. Not the ways of the world. One author I was reading suggested that the pursuit of righteousness is claiming who we are as a child of God's covenant - and accepting the responsibility of that comes with our palace as a child of God. What do you think? As clear as mud? I challenge you to figure it out - what does it mean to hunger and thirst after righteousness.......
In The Message, Eugene Peterson re-writes this beatitude in this way: 6 “You’re blessed when you’ve worked up a good appetite for God. He’s food and drink in the best meal you’ll ever eat.
Bon Appetit!
