“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” | Chapters 14 - 17 of the Gospel of John are sometimes referred to as the last words of Jesus. At first glance - these chapters can be a tad confusing. There are a lot of images that may not seem like they are connected...... but they are! One of the things that I noticed as I read these passages was how often words are repeated. This is often a techniques that writers use to encouage you to pay attention to a key point. In Chapter 14, verses 5 - 14, the word "know" is used a lot. I wonder why. What's the point of that? I imagine that will be one of the questions that I ask you to respond to. |
See too, Chapter 15: 1-17 - where he uses the word remain many times. Know. Remain. And then the Holy Spirit in the latter part of Chapter 15 and on through Chapter 16. In Chapter 17 - Jesus prays for his disciples - and - for us!
With these last words, Jesus is giving his disciples a summary of His teaching - in a very condensed form! There is a lot being said in these few chapters. Jesus is making sure that the disciples know what is very important. I am curious what you will learn as you read these final words of Jesus!
